Numbness and tingling in hands and lower arms

by Judy
(Sandusky, OH USA)

When waking in the morning both hands and arms are numb, ache terriby, tingle and have a burning sensation. Hands are very red and swollen. On August 17, 2008 I had a lower back spinal fusion. However, the numbness in the hands and arms didn't start until a few months ago. My right hand goes to sleep when I'm driving or on the computer.

Hello Judy,

You need to see your medical doctor about this Judy. It's probably not "serious" but it could be. Thrombosis can cause that swelling in the arms, but not likely bilaterally. Also congestion of the venous return in the Thoracic Outlet should be considered, again not likely both sides. A cough?

Fluid is not draining back from your lower arms to the heart. You don't sleep on your tum, do you?

Once "medical things" have been ruled out, then see your chiropractor. It could be related to a subluxation of the first ribs in your lower neck.

This is not related to the surgical procedure in your lower back.

I'd take a good long look at your diet too. Significantly overweight? Something in your cardiovascular system is complaining. Start eating fatty fish regularly, take fish oil capsules, more fruit and veg. Lots more?

I hope this has contributed.

jaw and face neck numbness
by: Anonymous

I am Raj.

Six years ago I met with an accident and both sides of my jaw were fractured and fixed with a steel plate on my jaw.

Now I feels numbness in jaw and face and my neck also in my arms; please give suggestions.

Hello Raj,
The nerve supplying the jaw and jaw joint is complaining; it's probably best you return to the surgeon who plated your mandible.

Most likely in the accident your neck was also injured; hence the numbness in your arms. You need an examination of your spine.

numbness and pain in fingers and hands after chiro
by: Anonymous

I am 58, weigh about 155 and am 5' 4". In Oct of 2014, I stupidly was showing my kindergarten students how to stand on their heads. Crack! I felt and heard pain. I did nothing at the time, thinking it will get better. I put best and capsacin patches on it and continued to have severe pain when I moved beyond a very limited area. So significant limited range of motion. In Feb I couldn't stand it and sent to a NUCCA chiro. He has a great reputation, but his head is way too big and after a half day taking xrays, etc. He told me to come back on a month, but only if I could call on a Mon before 9:05 and get an appt. He's so booked.

After a month I went to a newbie chiro. Nice young man, but now I am experiencing numbness, tingling and pain in my fingers and hands all night, during the day sometimes. I sleep on my back and try not to move and it is less. But due to the numbness, I can go to pick something up and almost lose it. I'm assuming the two are related, but I'm not sure. Who do I go to? I can't go on like this.

Hello,
You're in a pickle, frankly. Obviously you've had a serious injury and the further delay only aggravated it.

Have you seen the xrays? Can you tell me what they show, or better still take photos with your digi and send them to me at Contact.

Then we can take this further; it is serious so take it seriously. Yes, you're right, it was silly. Our legs are for standing on! But that's set in concrete, and you must move forwards. Smartly, send me those pictures.

Do me a favour please. Copy and paste this into a new thread instead of linking it onto all these old comments.

Question about hand, arm tingling
by: Anonymous

Hi -

I'm a 29 year old female. About 3 weeks ago I started experiencing tingling in my thumb most every time it's in use, as well sometimes in the pointer finger, middle finger, forearm and sometimes tricept area. No known injury to the neck. I don't have the best posture. I'm petite but have a well-balanced diet. Tinging usually happens throughout day but I was alarmed when I woke up this morning and couldn't bend my arm inward towards my chest. Any thoughts on what's going on would be much appreciated!! Thank you.

Hello Anonymous,
If the tingling goes into the middle finger, then you almost certainly have what's known as a double crush syndrome. The median nerve is affected in two, or even three places. The most common locations are in the thoracic outlet in the neck, between the bellies of the pronator teres muscles in the forearm, and the carpal tunnel in the wrist.

Do any movements of the neck provoke the tingling? Does raising your arm above your head relieve or increase the tingling?

Go to the Search function at Chiropractic Help and type in Upper Limb Tension Test. Do the test.

Print this out, and take your answers to your local chiropractor.

Let me know how you get on.

Ulna nerve transposition
by: Loz

I had very similar symptoms it turned out to be a trapped ulna nerve which was moved to the other side of my elbow.

Thanks for your comment; was it successful?
