Neck cracking after chiropractic treatment

by Evelyn

I went to a chiropractor to get a maintenance adjustment done as I've never had an injury or any pain. Within a week of having the neck adjustment done my neck has now been cracking every single time I turn my head to the left. I'm still in no pain but getting very depressed as I can't find any way to resolve this. I did go back to the chiropractor and I got a neck massage and got my neck adjusted again but it's exactly the same, no change, it didn't help. He believes, as do I, that the cause of the cracking is probably a ligament caught on bone. Is there any way to fix this or is this something I will have to learn to live with the rest of my life? Please any information would be very appreciated.

Hello Evelyn,
I would just leave well alone for a bit, and see what happens. Most likely it will settle down; you'll find some exercises in the navigation bar at Chiropractic Help.

It remains a contentious point in our profession; do you fix it when it's not broke? Having had numerous such cases myself, I now to tend to leave well alone if not painful and not stiff.

What I would suggest is more likely, is that you have some degenerative change in your neck (how old are you?) and a joint that was partially fused has been loosened, probably for the good.

But that's all speculative. I really don't know. Give it a few weeks of gentle exercise, and see what develops.
