Thigh and lower leg pain. Is this caused by femoral nerve damage?

Burning sensation down front of the thigh, knee and lower leg. Arthritis in hip. Hip replacement booked. Should I have a deeper investigation for the femoral nerve before surgery?

Hello Elra,
Hip arthritis classically causes radiating pain from the groin down the thigh to the knee.

However, the fact that it stretches down to the lower leg does invite questions.

Do you have any back pain?

If you bend slowly forwards, backwards or to the side do you get any pain down the leg?

Lying on a bed on your stomach, with the knee bent, as someone to raise your knee and stretch the femoral nerve. Compare the sides; is there tightness and discomfort in the front of the thigh? Do you know if there's loss of the knee jerk reflex? Has it been tested? Prick your legs with a sharp pin; is there numbness?

Really, this is a question to address to your orthopaedic surgeon. How about printing this out, and taking it to him?
