Do I have vertigo?
Suddenly I felt I was going sideways and had to hold on a table in order not to fall down; meanwhile the wall and ceiling started to move upside down; it lasted for close to a minute and I felt very uneasy and uncomfortable and scared. I've never had it before.
It certainly sounds like vertigo; for a period be careful of sudden movements of your head and neck, and especially looking up.
If it doesn't happen again, don't fuss.
The most common cause is a condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; it's caused by crystals coming loose in the inner ear.
The treatment of choice is not chiropractic manipulation, not pills but the Epley manoeuvres. Some chiropractors know about them, and a neurologist ought to. They are simple, safe and they work; you don't need expensive scans or treatment. Have a good look at our page on vertigo.
A simple examination called the Hallpark Dix test confirms the diagnosis.
It's a simply awful experience and you should not let it become chronic. The Epleys are very effective, but it may take you some homework to find someone who knows about them.
Very occasionally it's a problem related to the vertebra artery, and then cervical manipulation should only be done with the utmost caution, and only after the Epleys have not achieved anything; some would say it is definitely contraindicated but I have occasionally used it with success.
But only after the Epleys have been tried exhaustively.
I hope this contributes.
