Old inversion ankle sprain acting up

Diagram of ankle anatomy

Diagram of ankle anatomy

Hello!

To start with I have an inversion ankle inversion on my left foot, way back in August 2007. I was getting out of the car when I stepped on a rock causing me to topple over and sprained my ankle.

I never went to the hospital to get it checked or something. I just stayed home for barely one month until I could walk normally but still with pain. I didn't take any pain relievers for it. I just had my Aunt come every other day to massage my sprained foot.

Last week, I was carrying something and trying to get down from the ladder when I heard a loud "pop" in my ankle. It hurt for a while but it was gone and checked for bruises but there isn't, just a little swelling near my ankle. Until few days ago I started feeling like stepping on a rock then my knee and hips hurt I can't go up the stairs without experiencing pain in my knees and hips. Sometimes I feel like something is being stretched or torn around my ankle and the inner side of my knee.

Should I visit a doctor and would xray help to see if I torn a ligament or a more severe situation?
Thank you, looking forward for your reply.

Hello Cristy,
Of course, we have no idea what the original injury was. Most often there is tearing of some ligaments, strain of a muscle or two, and subluxation of either the ankle mortise or subtalar joints, or both. Fracture of one of the small ankle bones also occurs sometimes.

That changed your gait and hence you have the knock on effect on your knee and hip, or perhaps that was going to happen anyway.

The reduced movement in the ankle, if it was reduced by a fixated joint may have caused immobilisation arthritis. That is a distinct possibility.

In any event, what's now called for is an xray of your ankle, perhaps a scan though they are expensive, and a careful and thorough examination by someone knowledgeable about feet and ankles. Start hunting for the right person. Don't get put off with pain killers and anti inflammatories. You need a diagnosis and rehab of the ankle, and perhaps attention to the knee and hip too.

Good luck, it's probably not going to be plain sailing. In future if you have a serious injury like this, get it seen too.

Let me know in a month how you are progressing, keeping to this thread.

Ankle sprain with pressure pains

by Tracey williams
(Ebbw Vale of Glamorgan )

I sprained my ankle 15 days ago and my ankle is still swollen and painful; I'm getting a lot of pressure pains all the way around my ankle and down to my middle toe, and it's very tender to touch and painful going up the bottom of my leg; do I need to get another xray?

Hello Tracey,
Was your ankle properly examined for ligament damage, pulled tendons, subluxated bones, or was just an xray taken?

If your feeling is that you were carefully and thoroughly examined, then oddly, yes, another xray is perhaps in indicated. A fracture is often missed when the xray is taken before swelling set in.

But if you weren't properly examined, then that's where I would begin. Meantime continue to ice the ankle, use a crutch, exercise it gently with our alphabet exercises, and use your common sense.

Good luck, these injuries can be a trial.

Ankle sprain treatment

ankle sprain treatment

I think I have sprained my ankle too many times, maybe more than five, and no i feel a bone in the top middle of my foot that i dont feel feel on my other foot that is not sprained

What do I do

What is it?

Hello Luis,
So, you have no pain in the ankle or foot? No stiffness? You can walk, jog without a problem?

Then I wouldn't get too excited about that bump in the middle of your foot.

But a little bit excited wouldn't do any harm! That bump is probably one of the cuneiforms, perhaps the navicular or cuboid.

If it's been jammed up, fixated after one of the attacks of sprained ankle, then it will pretty quickly get Immobilisation Arthritis … and that is significant. Pain. Worse, disability.

Find a good chiropractor is your next stop. One who specialises in feet. Ask before making an appointment. A FICS qualification would help. Sports chiropractic.

ankle sprain then hip surgery

by Dave
(Osceola, WI)

I sprained my ankle in 2012. After almost 2 years of limping on my left side, we found a tear in my hip labrum and cartilage tore off the bone. It was a work related injury to my foot. What are your thoughts about the hip injury?

Hello Dave,
First, that ankle. I take it x-rays were taken and there was no fracture; because of overlapping bones, fractures are quite often missed. Perhaps another x-ray might be indicated.

In a sprained ankle, frequently the talus or calcaneus is subluxated, causing sharp pain on walking and, if not reduced, changing your whole gait, as has happened in your case. Look for a sports oriented chiropractor with a FICS qualification; phone your local chiropractic association for a name.

Now the hip; as you suspect, almost certainly a knock effect from limping.

Start by pulling your knee to the chest, and then gently making a circle from out to in. The trick is to reach the pain threshold, but not cross it. As soon as it gets uncomfortable, back off. Keep doing it repetitively about ten times several times a day. It can be done best lying down, but sitting too. You may be lucky and the joint settles down in a few months. You want to get the joint fluids sloshing about in there to bring nutrients to the cartilage. Otherwise it becomes arthritic.

The sacroiliac joint often is involved, and there you need a chiropractor who uses the Thompson drop technique; it's very common, used by most chiros.

One thought. If your chiropractor puts you on your side and does what's called a lumbar roll, make sure he doesn't put too much pressure on the femur; shout if you feel pain in the groin. Sooner rather than later.

I hope this contributers; let me know how you get on.

cracked talus/ankle sprain?

I injured my foot almost 2 weeks ago. I do not have money to go to an orthopedic so instead I've been to two different hospitals. One hospital said I have a cracked talus, the other hospital said it's a bad ankle sprain. My foot is still swollen especially around the ankle and heel, although the swelling has went down a lot. 90% of my foot and ankle is bruised including the bottom of my foot.

I recently had red little spots to pop up all over my toes? I can't walk on my foot and I can't bend my foot and toes up. I can move my foot a little but not much. Any advice on what it is and what I should do is greatly appreciated.

A cracked talus is a serious injury. It will become arthritic if not carefully managed. You should certainly be in a POP cast or moon boot.

Find the money and go to a good orthopod. Soon. Otherwise you risk being disabled for the rest of your life; I'm not exaggerating.

Gather your xrays and take them with you; let him or her make the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Exercises needed for ankle sprain

by Sai kumar
(Hyderabad)

Hi,
My ankle got sprained and doctor told me that calcaneofibular ligament got torn. It was 3 weeks ago. But, still swelling is there at the end of the ligament. Please help me when to do which exercises.

Hello Sai,
Some swelling may stay for a while, but is walking painful?

One wants to be sure there is no hidden fracture, or subluxated bone in the ankle. Both occur fairly frequently, but generally you'll not only have swelling, but pain.

At Chiropractic Help, type ankle exercises into the search function, and you'll find the alphabet exercises.

Good luck, write again if it's not improving.
