Whiplash

Do you know any chiropractor or other medical professional who deals with these problems in the Aspen/Glenwood Springs area.
Years ago, I suffered in a severe auto accident from whiplash, brain injury and everything that went with it. Over the years, I have noticed the tingling of the arms/wrists, back pain, neck pain (now have arthritis and degeneration from neck down to lower back), horrific burning in the foot creating walking problems, head pressure, nightmares, the usual pschological problems etc etc.
Though I spent years with MD's, chiropractors and therapists, I was
not knowledgeable nor able to make good decisions about care. And things have changed since the accident in 1975.
Recently, I was rear-ended again, but not nearly as bad...though I see some of the symptoms returning. Am being treated by a therapist
with exercise and neck traction.
Having read recently about what other symptoms can be created by whiplash, I almost feel the lack of proper treatment in the past has left me with some of the current problems - sciatic, foot pain, neck and lower back pain all over again, along with the emotional problems.
But it takes a professional who really specializes in this type of therapy to understand.
Thanks for your help - wish you weren't so far away.
Dear Jo,
I'm afraid that whiplash can be a devastating event in a person's life. And as you say, there are many psychological knock-on effects. Pain does that.
There is no easy solution. Certainly chiropractic has no magic bullets. I've treated many serious whiplash cases over the years and often I too have felt disheartened. Whiplash leaves a permanent mark on most people.
So, what do we do? Have a pity-party? Absolutely not, like all other serious disease we have to face these things courageously. Read for example the stirring quote by Norman Cousins in our latest newsletter that will go out later today or tomorrow. (Signed up yet? At the bottom of any C-H page, it's free).
My best solution is:
* An occasional, but regular chiropractic adjustment. Not too often... perhaps 6-8 weeks.
* A regular massage.
* Neck and back exercises done faithfully.
* A healthy diet. Whiplash causes chronic arthritis, and it's far worse if you are on a Black-and-White diet.
* Drive slower, more carefully, with a seat-belt. Each whiplash adds its effect.
* A home traction unit.
I'm afraid I can't help with a local chiro. Ask friends and family, even your doctor.
I hope this contributes.
