tingling in the hand, arms, legs, face at different times however mostly in hands

by Colleen
(Edinburgh Scotland)

I am 54yrs, female, healthy, am never sick, am fit, gym, do pilates and I am experiencing tingling or prickly feeling all over body at times in the day. Sometimes wke up with pins and needles in arm.

I feel great and have lots of energy. I normally go the natural route and don't know if I should be concerned.

I am in menopause and have noticed lots of little but insignificant changes in my body. The last day I have noticed my hands are warmer than usual.

I dont know if I should embark on a medical investigation of scans etc. What do you think? Maybe an underactive thyroid or pinched nerve in neck? I have cold urticaria for 30 years, maybe a link?

Hello Colleen,
Frankly, I'm unsure. It could be a lot of things, ranging from serious to insignificant.

I doubt the pinched nerve in the neck, as you are getting the tingling all over. Is in your hand, or hands? It's theoretically possible for a pinched nerve in the neck to cause tingling in the feet (type "cervical stenosis" into the Search this site at C-H) but unlikely at your age, and general good health.

Start to look out for little twitching in the muscles, called fasciculations. Prick your hands and legs and face with a pin, comparing sides. Jump on one leg, then the other, stand on toes, look out for any signs of weakness developing.

If it's something new, I'd just wait a bit and look out for the above, without getting overly anxious. If it's been there for a month or two, then I think it's time to consult your doctor.

Meantime increase consumption of the health fats: fish, avocado and olive, and nuts. Nerves are coated in a fatty myelin sheath. Hi carb /low fat diets are particularly dangerous.

Let me know in a month or two how you are doing, keeping this thread.

Hoping this has contributed.
