tingling in right thumb and index finger
Hello, I have tingling in the right thumb and index finger, right inside elbow, mostly when my arm is elevated, such as working a mouse, or standing with my arm unsupported. It seems to start with a pain between my right side shoulder blade and spine. What's up? I've had this 4-5 months, Jack Hello Jack, The thumb and index finger are very specific. They are supplied by the C6 nerve root, so we've already eliminated a Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Allowing your arm to hang unsupported would stretch the nerve out and typically aggravate a pinched or irritated nerve in the neck. Does placing your hand on your head relieve the pain? That takes the stretch off the nerve, called the Shoulder Abduction Relief sign.
But the fact that raising your arm aggravates the pain suggests that there could be a Thoracic Outlet involvement of the first rib, scalene muscles or collar bone. The definitive test is called Adson's test.
Placing a small table on your right side at your computer station, with your elbow on the table may relieve the computer problem partially. That too takes the stretch off the nerve and shoulder.
Frankly you need to see a chiropractor. You almost certainly have a subluxation in the lower neck, and possibly degenerative changes. This probably won't get better on it's own. Talk to friends, even your GP and find a thorough conscientious DC in your area.
X-rays of your neck are advisable including "obliques".
I hope this has contributed.
