Tingling in my left hand/thumb after lifting weights

by Sean Lehmann
(Portage)

Last year I started lifting weights at the gym, like free weights, but my left hand started to tingle and I got the pins and needles feeling, it got so bad and my anxiety of Carpa; tunnel syndrome was on the rise.

I saw a Chiropractor and he said it wasn't a nerve damage problem. I had to stop working out tho.

Today I went for my first work-out again, and I did my arms, lifted free weights and such, but I can feel that tingling in my left thumb again! What is this!? can it be fixed!?

Hello Sean,

First off, try to isolate EXACTLY which fingers it effects. If it's the thumb and forefinger, then we think of a nerve root impingement (but you make no mention of neck pain). Does turning your head to that side, and then extending your head do anything in the neck or arm? Does placing your hand on your head relieve, or aggravate the tingling?

If it affects the thumb, forefinger, middle finger, and sometimes part of the ring finger, then yes, Carpal tunnel syndrome. It's what we call a double crush syndrome, usually in the wrist and forearm, and perhaps the neck or first rib.

If it's all the fingers, then we think of a Thoracic Outlet syndrome, a first rib entrapment.

All of these are conditions that I treat on a daily basis, mostly successfully.

Use the Search this site facillity on the navigation bar at Chiropractic-help to understand more about these terms.

At the end of the day, if you only have trouble when doing weights, then perhaps it makes sense to find another sport. Or are you trying to make the Olympic team?!!!

I hope this has contributed.
