Tingling in arms and hands, especially in right arm, shortness of breath

by SL
(Australia)

Tingling in arms and hands

Hi,
I have had shortness of breath for about 12 months on and off now, and I have just developed tingling sensation in my right arm, specifically the inner bicep area and upper wrist area.

As well as this, I have a constant ache between my shoulder blades (right side). This ache is more spinal than muscular I feel, however, when I lean sideways to the left, I can feel the spine being agrivated, as if it gives a pain like I am stretching a muscle. It's not overly painful, but more like a good pain.
I have had numerous tests done by my doctor (blood, lung, kidney, liver etc etc) and nothing has showed up.
The shortness of breath use to worry me but now it does not so much as I have got used to it. But now this tingling, along with the shortness of breath, I am starting to worry. I am booked in to see the doctor again, but I was wondering if this is more spinal / chiropractic related?

Your thoughts please?

Hello SL,
To breathe normally, involves movement of the ribs and diaphragm. That constant ache between the shoulder blades is certainly telling you something, though there are many possible causes. Obviously it's good that major medical pathology has been ruled out.
Do you also have any breast-bone pain?
Most likely you have a restriction of normal rib movement, either at the so-called costo-spinal joint (in the back), or the costo-sternal joint (in the front), or both. These are conditions that chiropractic excels in.
The tingling in your arm may, or may not, be related. It's in the T1 dermatome and can come directly from your neck (do you have any neck pain? does turning your head to the right, and looking up hurt in the neck, or increase the tingling in your arm? do you get relief by placing your hand on your head, or does it increase the tingling?)
Sometimes that tingling may come from a fixated first rib (aka Thoracic Outlet syndrome) or Scalene muscle spasm - the lowermost nerves from the neck (C7 and T1) lie directly over the first rib.
Only a careful and thorough Chiropractic examination can determine whether these are chiropractic conditions. They are the sorts of things I treat on a daily basis, but there are also "medical" causes. Not a smoker?
When you see your doctor, ask if he can recommend a competent experienced chiropractor in your neighbourhood. Ask friends and family too.
I hope this has contributed.
