Tingling arms and hands, some neck and lower face.
I was hoping you could help. I did a large amount of yard work over the past week with a lot of lifting and raking I am not used to. I have had my hands and forearm go numb before from typing or sleeping on them. I started noticing discomfort right after finishing the last day of work. It took 8 hours to finish raking the yard and laying down 4 bags of grass seed.
3 days later I went to emergency room, last night. I have heart arrythmias but didn't feel any. I was having the warm and tingle in arms and collar bone. The did blood work that told them to do a CAT. I did not have clots. They also did X-ray and EKG. Everything was ok with the heart and no clots.
Now this morning as I am working on the computer the symptoms are coming back and spreading up my neck to lower face. Very warm and tingly. My hands are cold to the touch but tingle also.
I am 44 yr old femal. I ws in a car accident in my mid 20's. I was hit from behind in my car. Soft tissue damage lower neck and some physical therapy. Issue was addressed.
Still limited ROM, can't turn all the way to left to look over shoulder ever since. Now most of the neck and face warmth and tingle is on the left side. Front and back of neck. I am tired but not passing out.
Any help would be greatlu appreciated.
Thanks. PCB
Dear PCB,
Obviously when it affects your left arm and face they were concerned about angina, but now that's been excluded, what are the alternatives.
That limited left rotation is very significant. It almost certainly means that you have significant joint fixations in your neck, and possibly now some arthritis since it happened more than twenty years ago. You said X-rays were taken - of your neck? Do you know what they showed? Could you get a copy for me? You can send jpegs with this program.
When a joint is injured, the first thing that happens is local pain, probably also some ligament and muscle damage, but if the joint remains fixated, then one or other movement is limited. Left rotation in your case.
If it remains fixated, then immobilisation arthritis sets in... ask about your x-rays.
Then eventually, the nerve becomes affected and you start to get the pain or tingling in the arm.
The tingling in your face is more complex. The sensory nucleus for the nerve that supplies your face lies in the upper neck, and supplies the jaw joint as well. Any jaw clicking or pain? There's a complex relationship between the jaw, the trigeminal nerve and the upper neck.
Then the first rib and the collar bone could be involed too.
In short, sudden overload of an old injury. Take things more slowly next time. That was a heck of lot of work for one day.
I would suggest you start by getting hold of your X-rays and if the pain and tingling remains then look for a local experienced chiropractor.
I hope this has contributed.
