Thoracic spine scoliosis

A short leg

Please I wish to enquire about what options you have for my daughter of about 19years old with scoliosis of angle greater than 40degrees.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Sola Ibadan Nigeria.

Hello Sola,
Yes, difficult and unfortunately not detected when she was still a child. It should have been.

It almost certainly starts in the lower back, and a short leg needs to be considered. A small insert in her shoe may help.

A lifetime of exercise for her lower back and midback, and probably neck too, is vital. Done every day. Five mins in the morning, five minutes at night. See "lower back exercises" at C-H for a start. EVERY day.

She must accept that hard physical work is not for her, but a desk job may not be good either. Too much sitting.

The scoliosis is not likely to progress much now provided she has no bad falls and does the exercises.

Surgeons would love to put Harrington rods into her spine, and there is a place for them, but I recommend you explore more conservative treatment first. Physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage...

I hope this contributes.
