Right ring and middle fingers go to sleep at night

by Jim
(Sandston, Va)

Right ring and middle fingers go to sleep at night

I sleep on my side (either/both) with my arm under the pillow under my head. My right ring finger and middle finger go to sleep, and it's difficult to get ring of the tingling.

This happens when I am laying on the other arm, although at som time during the night I will lay on that arm. What is causing this. How can I wake the fingers up more quickly. Could Chiropractic help?

Hello Jim,
Classically the ring finger (neurologically) goes with the pinkie, so your symptoms are a bit oddball.

However, the middle finger (C7 dermatome) sometimes goes along with the medial side of the ring finger, and even the index finger.

But it's certainly not a carpal tunnel syndrome.

They way you sleep sounds fine, so that in itself is not the cause.

You make no mention of neck pain. Does turning your head and lookng up cause any pain or tingling?

What's needed is a careful examination of your neck and arm to determine where the problem is. I'd suspect the lower neck, but there are other possibilities. Perhaps some X-rays of your neck would be a good start.

Some people find that doing a windmill with their arms in the morning helps to alleviate the symptoms. Try it.
