Arm falls asleep at night and wakes me up
by Loretta

Occassionally I am awakened at night because one or both of my arms has fallen asleep and is numb. Most of the time I notice this when sleeping on my back. Sometimes when sleeping on my stomach or on my side I also notice this. What could be the cause?
I had thoracic outlet syndrome and had both of my 1st ribs and extra cervical ribs removed a few years back. I'm quite active in yoga and work out regularly.
My first thought Loretta, before reading the second paragraph, was TOS. The second was carpal tunnel syndrome, both which are caused by first rib fixations, but in the absence of a first rib post-surgery, perhaps fibrosis at the site of the surgery.
Chiropractic may be able to help you by working on the scalene muscles and the lower arm, but it's a bit uncertain. I'd start with another visit to the surgeon.
