a small area in the side of the neck about a pea size hard substance what is it? How did it get there?

by Pat G
(milw.,Wi)

My son has an area in the side of his neck that has a pea size substance. It is hard to the touch and slightly black in color. It hurts when you touch it. It just appeared about five weeks ago. Is this cartalidge? how did it get there? why does it hurt him? What can be done about it?

Hello Pat,

I'm assuming it's not a pimple, black head, small boil. That I think you would recognise.

My first thought was a lymph node, but that's unlikely to be black(ish).

I doubt it's cartilage.

My advice is to see your GP. You want to be sure that it's not a melanoma. If s/he is unsure, ask to see a dermatologist.

I hope this has contributed.
