What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractor Bedfordview Edenvale KemptonPark Norwood Raedene helps you find your local DC.

You may have heard that chiropractic could help you with a condition that is troubling. Perhaps it's a pain like a frozen shoulder, or tingling in your arms and hands.

There are many arm pain syndromes that have their root in the cervical spine. Conditions like the carpal tunnel case file below, for example.

Irritation of the nerve root, or the brachial plexus bundles as they pass through the so called thoracic outlet, or under the pectoralis minor tendon, or between the bellies of the pronator teres muscle in the forearm often lead to what's known as a double crush syndromes.

The nerve is affected in two, and even three places contributing to your frozen shoulder or tennis elbow. Type arm pain into the search engine found in the navigation bar on the left and you'll get more specific details.

Add to that mouse arm, repetitive strain injuries and long hours sitting behind the wheel of your car or truck and you have all the makings of the many pain syndromes that can be severely disabling and painful; often they are worst at night, disturbing sleep too.

In the very worst of these nerve pains in your arm, you'll find that you get relief by raising your arm, often sleeping by placing it under your head; it's known as the should abduction relief sign.

Think first of treating the cause, not the symptoms; that means chiropractic help.

Chiropractic Help

There is no strong evidence that chiropractic help can cure your carpal tunnel syndrome; but every chiropractor in Bedfordview, Edenvale, KemptonPark, Norwood and Raedene knows this is a condition that responds really quite well to our care.

And, on the other hand researchers have neither is there any strong scientific evidence that surgery too can permanently cure the condition; and there are many risks associated with the scalpel, not the least the anaesthetic; at least our care will not injure you.

In short there's no scientific research confirming that a chiropractor Bedfordview Edenvale KemptonPark Norwood Raedene can help your carptal tunnel syndrome; but neither can a medical doctor either; it's your choice basically. Are you into conservative or more adventurous treatment?

Very frequently it's a double crush syndrome with the median nerve irritated not only in the carpal tunnel but also in the neck or forearm as the nerve passes between the bellies of the pronator teres muscle; then surgery will certainly not cure you.

We recommend trying the most conservative treatment first; if it doesn't help, there's always the surgical option. Consider this carpal tunnel case file, for example.

Even more likely it's not arm pain but one of the many leg pain syndromes; they too often their origin in an irritated nerve from the lower back; a lumbar facet syndrome or sacroiliac condition, for example.

The slipped disc symptoms case file below may help you understand the chiropractic management of this nasty condition. Each and every case is unique and a challenge, but really it is our bread and butter. If you are starting to get symptoms in your leg, please come sooner rather than later.

Are you anxious about consulting a DC? Read What is Chiropractic and remember you can always ask for a consultation that involves no treatment. That gives you space to go and think about your chiropractor's recommendations. Many chiropractors do not charge for such a consultation. It involves a short history and curtailed examination to determine whether you have a chiropractic or medical condition.

Leg pain

Chiropractor Bedfordview Edenvale KemptonPark Norwood Raedene will help sort out your leg pain.

If it's a chiropractic condition like ankle joint pain, sciatica or the leg pain during pregnancy then you can expect good management of your problem. If it's something medical like intermittent claudication then you can expect a referral to your doctor; it's caused by smoking and manipulation of your back won't help.

Pain in the leg is highly complex but during pregnancy is really very common. It can be a pinched nerve in the buttock called a piriformis syndrome, or a thigh muscle problem which is greatly helped by an iliotibial band stretch. Often it's from the sacroiliac joint, but disc injuries happen too.

Leg pain in pregnancy frequently radiates to the groin and inner thigh, causing exquisite groin and pubic bone pain.

Then you could be suffering from runner's ankle, which you can read about in this ankle joint pain case file. It can even be a blocked artery, called intermittent claudication.

Follow any links that may seem applicable; scroll down at Chiropractic Conditions you'll find much, much more. These are just a few of the conditions that you'll find in navigation bar on the left about leg pain. Gone are the days where you chiropractor will address only your spine. Many spinal problems have their root in the lower limb; like a short leg. Sometimes a simple, inexpensive insert in your shoe can make a profound difference to your health.

Not all chiropractors have been to courses specialising the treatment of leg pain. If you are suffering from foot pain, for example, ask first before making an appointment.

Chiropractic help is not just about spinal health. We are a wholistic profession concerned also that you would benefit by starting to exercise, eating better and taking proper holidays.

You may well find that your chiropractor will want to discuss his healthy living tips. I started doing that after a patient dropped dead two months after I fixed his back, but didn't address his weight problem.

It's interesting that when I trained, some 35 years ago the emphasis in chiropractic was orthopaedics; today, all that has changed, not that orthopaedic assessment of the spine and limbs isn't important.

But there's been a shift in the direction of neurology; what causes tingling in the arms and legs, can chiropractic help vertigo and what part does the jaw joint play in migraine headaches, for example. All of these are disturbances of the neurological system.

It's interesting that the sensory nucleus of the jaw joint nerve, the trigeminal, has its sensory nucleus in the upper neck. Neck pain, a popping jaw, facial pain and migraine headaches are very often inter-connected. It's all in the neurology.

Whilst mild episodes of a spinning world are not uncommon in the older person, a real attack of vertigo is one of the most awful conditions that come to the chiropractic coalface; I suffer from it myself occasionally. It causes a profound disturbance of the neurological system; nausea, vomiting, and falling over. It's usually caused by a blockage in the inner ear and the treatment of choice is not pills, not manipulation of the neck but some exercises known as the Epley manoeuvres. Ask your chiropractor too about home remedy for vertigo.

Finding a good chiropractor, one who is knowledgeable about your particular problem, is not always that easy. A chiropractor who is interesting in treating hip conditions like hip dysplasia may not be person to choose if you have a painful, clicking jaw, or a sports related injury. Find a good chiropractor ...

Interesting challenges of the day

1. Mr S is a 76 year old man with neck pain of some 9 months duration. Luckily, most of the discomfort is upper cervical which is only rarely arthritic; his lower cervical spine is a degenerative mess that I've left alone. After seven treatments his pain and stiffness is 50 percent better, and he's happy in the circumstances. He can sleep through the night now and that makes a huge difference.

2. Mr P is 32 year old man with very severe lower back pain radiating to the big toe which is 30 percent numb. He had an episode three weeks ago, took anti inflammatories and was soon better as is typical of the medial disc herniation. But before it healed, after a trivia it came roaring back, much worse. The characteristic crossed sign was evident; sitting in a chair, straightening the right leg provoked severe left back pain and tingling in the leg. He's doing well.

3. Severe lower back pain is scary; just ask Mrs P. Just watching her get out of the car I she was in trouble; she had a slipped disc at L4 making her lean towards the opposite side; luckily she had no pain in the leg. Despite family pressure that this was far too severe for a chiropractor, she persevered. Within five days she was standing upright, and after two weeks almost painfree.

Despite a hectic job, she wisely took my advice and stayed home for what I call exercising bed rest.

4. Mr S has had lower back, groin and back of thigh and calf pain for fourth months.

He has a pincer deformity in the hip causing the stabs in the groin, and a degenerative facet causing the sciatica. Both are responding well to chiropractic and he's well pleased; sixty five percent better after three treatments.

5. Mr T is a wise man; he's taken a warning TIA seriously and has lost 15 pounds, and has at least as much again to lose. A change to a low starch diet and half hour daily walk has made the difference; but the walking is making his foot and back miserable. The expensive orthotic is hopeless; luckily his hips and back are fine, but he needs a simple heel lift.

6. I too have had serious lower back issues, luckily fixed by my own chiropractor; so I too have to do my exercises, take care when lifting supers full of honey, gardening and using the chainsaw. Regaining the function of your spine is just as important as the pain.

7. My own granddaughter, only 7 is hypermobile giving her pelvic, knee and ankle issues. Xrays show a mildly dysplastic hip. Years ago we would have called it growing pains. She too regularly needs chiropractic care and luckily responds well. Increased range of motion is more difficult than too stiff in my opinion. Our care is for kids too.

8. This 65 year old lady is a serious gardener; every day she is bending, lifting and digging for 2 to 3 hours a day. It regularly catches her in the sacroiliac joint, so she has a treatment once a month that sorts it out. She does her lower back exercises faithfully.

9. This 88 year old lady is an inspiration; every day she is busy in the community. With a nasty scoliosis she manages very well with a chiropractic adjustment every six weeks and exercises faithfully done.

10. Mr X is a 71 year old retired man who wants to continue with maintenance care every six to eight weeks; he had suffered from two years of lower back pain when he first came a year ago. He has no discomfort now after 8 chiropractic treatments, but is aware that danger lurks.

11. Mrs C has been having severe headaches, and taking a lot of analgesics. It's a non complicated upper cervical facet syndrome, and she's doing well.

12. Mr D is a 38 old year man with chronic shoulder pain after a rotator cuff tear playing cricket. It responded well to treatment, but he knows he must do his exercises every day; for two years he couldn't sleep on that shoulder.

13. Mr D, a 71 year old man, has a severe ache in the shoulder and midback since working above his head. Trapped nerve tests are negative but he has advanced degenerative joints of Luschka; after just two treatments he is 50 percent better. Can we reach 90?

And so the day goes; chiropractors shouldn't be treating the elderly most medical sites state but that's so much bunkum.

Interesting questions from visitors

Greetings, Dr B.
You helped me quite some time back with a soothing and professional response which turned out to be exactly correct. I now consult a local chiropractor. You write a superb newsletter, too.

Your own unresolved problem. Pose a question

Knowing that up to 70% of the time the correct diagnosis is made with no examination, no special tests, no xrays, but just from the history, there's a fair chance I can add some insight to your unresolved problem. But at least 30% of the time, I may be quite wrong! Give plenty of detail if you want a sensible reply.

You visited this chiropractic help site no doubt because you have a problem that is not resolving and want to know more about what chiropractors do.

The quickest and most interesting way is to read one of my ebooks of anecdotes. Described by a reader as gems, both funny and healthful, from the life and work of a chiropractor, you'll love them. Priced right at $2.99, though Kindle fiddles the price without telling me.
